Description and Objectives

We love to listen and dance to the music of the great tango orchestras, but why should we get to know more about them?

Envision yourself at the Milonga when a tanda starts playing, you recognize the orchestra's unique style, you know their signature sounds, the singers, and the meaning of the lyrics. Furthermore, you will feel equipped with techniques that could make your improvisation more enjoyable.

Our intention in studing and sharing knowledge about the tango orchestras is to enhance our appreciation and understanding of tango music, as well as enrich our dancing experience. Here are a few ways in which this course will benefit you as a tango dancer:

  1. Musical Interpretation: Musicality is one of the magic of Argentine Tango. Through  simple sequences we teach how to become more attuned to the nuances of the music, such as the phrasing, instruments, dynamics, and accents, which will enhance your ability to express yourself on the dance floor both as a leader and as a follower.
  2. Song Selection: Tango orchestras have vast repertoires of songs, each with its mood, tempo, and character. Along this course, we will introduce a carefully curated selection of iconic songs that - while helping us introduce the concepts we want to share,  will help you develop preferences based on your personal taste and dancing style.
  3. Connection to the Lyrics: Tango music often features poetic and evocative lyrics that tell stories of love, longing, and nostalgia. Understanding the lyrics and their meaning can deepen your emotional connection to the music. Together we will explore the themes and emotions conveyed in the songs, which can inspire and inform your dance movements, allowing you to tell a more compelling story through your dance.
  4. Appreciation for Singers: Tango orchestras often collaborate with renowned singers who bring their unique vocal styles that also affect interpretation. We picked voices that can deepen your appreciation for their artistry, discover new favorites, that can influence your musical preferences, and inspire your dancing.

By immersing yourself in the world of tango orchestras and how to interpret them, you can expand your knowledge, deepen your connection to the music, and elevate your tango experience

About Joey Ferreira

Joe Ferreira is originally from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. A young Maestro is now based in Boca Raton, FL. His impressive 23-year journey with Argentine Tango began at the age of 12, just three years after he started learning Brazilian partner dances. He first danced tango scenario as part of a social project, and by the age of 14, he was delving into Salon style. Remarkably, by 16, Joe was already sharing his knowledge by teaching at his school.

Over the years, Joe continued to refine his craft by learning from esteemed Argentine maestros and sharing his expertise through performances and classes at festivals, congresses, and events across South America. Notably, in 2012, he achieved a remarkable feat by winning both the Pista and Escenario categories in a state championship in Brazil.
